Resumen de La persistance de la mémoire: angoisse culturelle à l'âge photographique

This paper attempts to situate Proustian acts of memory in a wider cultural context where the art of the past is transformed by the new proliferation of photographic reproductions. Two writers outside the literary field, Sigmund Freud and art historian Bernard Berenson, in different and striking ways, suggest that seeing the work of art in the age of photography implies some kind of psychological fragmentation. There is an attempt to comprehend the past and make it an object of study, but the posited authentic original always eludes historical inquiry.

Cette étude replace les actes mnémoniques proustiens dans un contexte culturel où l’art du passé est véritablement transformé par la prolifération des reproductions photographiques. Deux auteurs extérieurs au champ littéraire, Sigmund Freud et l’historien de l’art Bernard Berenson, suggèrent chacun à leur manière que la vision de l’oeuvre d’art à l’âge photographique implique une sorte de fragmentation psychologique, causée par une double structure : le passé est à la fois intégralement saisi et transformé en objet d’étude, alors que l’oeuvre originale, authentique, est posée comme un fondement scientifique.
