    If Michaux' painting originates in an ancient anger with "the Verb", it nonetheless never completely gave up on writing. In trying to invent his own "ideograms" Michaux, transforming his pen into a brush, finds his way to signs through the movement involved in calligraphy. Each gesture, first an exorcism in character, leads the sign to the line and finally purifies itself as pure elementary line tracing. Rid of language little by little, it is no longer the expression of something that preceded it: it creates the present, through its rhythm.

    Si la peinture de Michaux provient d’une vieille colère contre « le verbal », elle n’a jamais tout à fait abandonné l’écriture. En essayant d’inventer ses propres « idéogrammes », Michaux, changeant la plume en pinceau, trouve la voie des signes par le geste calligraphique. D’abord exorcisant, le geste conduit le signe au trait pour enfin se purifier dans un mouvement élémentaire de tracé. Débarrassé peu à peu du langage, il n’est plus l’expression d’une antériorité : il fait le présent, par le rythme.
