The project for the Catafalque of Pope Alexander VIII was disegned by Mattia De Rossi. The catafalque erected in the Vatican Basilica for the funeral of Pope Alexander VIII is known only through the engraving published in 1691 by the printer Domenico De Rossi. A drawing signed by the architect Mattia De Rossi, newly discovered in the State Archive of Rome, sheds new light on this highly appreciated ephemeral monument, by also giving information on measurements and colours selected. Furthermore, unpublished sources add important details on the ceremonies, the massive use of candles and the dressing of the corpse in the pontifical robes embroidered by Giulio Cesare de Romanis and Agostino Banchieri.
