    Entre la idea estética de la ruina romántica y el valor de novedad implícito en la arquitectura contemporánea, la modernidad queda en un punto indefinido en su valoración como patrimonio. Al ser concebida desde las premisas de novedad y funcionalidad, asumió su caducidad y la consecuente sustitución por otra arquitectura acorde a los tiempos. Por el contrario, el ciclo de vida de nuestros edificios los hace sobrevivir a los dogmas ideológicos de sus creadores, siendo heredados por una sociedad que se cuestiona su utilidad. Decantarse por lo sostenible y prolongar su vida útil es apostar por la duración (la durée de H.Bergson), contraponiendo la clásica idea de lo estático frente a la “elaboración continua de lo absolutamente nuevo”. La arquitectura que dura está vinculada al clima y se convierte en un mecanismo energético que gestiona las condiciones ambientales. Esta capacidad, mensurable con la tecnología actual, ya estaba presente en la arquitectura moderna.

    Modernist architecture has an indefinitely valuation as heritage. It lies between two ideas: aesthetic concept of Romantic ruins and novelty value of contemporary architecture. Due to it was designed with novelty and functionality premises, it assumed its expiration date and, as consequence, its replacement by a new architecture according to the new time. On the other hand, the long life cycle of our buildings allows them to survive beyond their architect’s ideologies. Society, which inherit this buildings from past, asks now about their utility. If we decide to opt for sustainability and we extend our buildings life, we are choosing for duration (durée from H.Bergson). But duration is opposite to the classical idea of permanence, because duration means "the continual elaboration of the absolutely new". If architecture is durable is linked to climate and the building becomes an energy exchanger that manages the environmental conditions. This capability was already present in Modernist architecture and is measurable with the current technology.
