Resumen de "Centro e Periferia": Guillaume de Marcillat and the Modernisation of Taste in the Cathedral of Arezzo

Tom Henry

  • This article discusses Marcillat's role in disseminating the art of High Renaissance Rome to central Itały. On the basis of a prominent career at the papai court, Marcillat was attracted to Arezzo and given stained glass and fresco commissions in the Cathedral (1516-28). He clearły imitated the most up-to-date works of Michelangelo, Raphael and Sebastiano, and there is some evidence that this was at the request of his patrons and a large part of his appeal. As such this example challenges the dismissal of provincial patrons and artists by Enrico Castelnuovo and Carlo Ginsburg in their essay: "Centro e Periferia."
