  • Borduas and his companions' 1948 manifesto claims the rights of art and emotion over history, in a dechristianised and highly literary form ; it belongs to rather than dominates the story of Quebec's anticlericalism, and is an accomplished artifact — not the origin — of its (understudied) modernism.
