  Este artículo muestra la estrecha relación entre el gobierno de la ciudad de Valen- cia y las distintas instituciones de la Iglesia –parroquias y conventos– en la vida social de mediados del siglo xVI. las parroquias y conventos de la ciudad desarrollan una importante tarea asistencial y caritativa, en un contexto socioeconómico de carestías alimentarias. la Iglesia colabora también en tareas de administración y gobierno municipal. En la primera dé- cada del siglo xVII, la ciudad ha sufrido una importante transformación en su vida social y re- ligiosa. la fundación del Colegio del Patriarca será uno de los legados más importantes de Juan de ribera a la Iglesia y a la ciudad de Valencia, y su proyecto de formación es una clara concreción de la nueva iglesia del barroco.

  this paper shows the close relationship between the government of the city of Valen- cia and the various institutions of the Church – parishes and convents – in the social life of mid- sixteenth century. Parishes and convents in the city have a significant welfare and charitable work in a socioeconomic context of food shortages. the Church is also working on tasks of ad- ministration and municipal government. In the first decade of the seventeenth century, the city has undergone a major transformation in its social and religious life. the foundation of the Cole- gio del Patriarca is one of Juan de Ribera’s most important legacies for the church and for the city of Valencia, and his educational project is a clear achievement of the new Baroque Church.
