    L’autore ripercorre in una breve sintesi, la storia dei maggiori restauri dei superstiti monumenti funerari in Italia e in Europa, sottolineando come ogni tentativo di restauro-ricostruzione sia reso problematico dalla estrema varietà di casi che si incontrano e delle condizioni che di volta in volta si presentano, tematiche accompagnate da molti esempi. Ribadisce però fermamente come, alla base di ogni restauro deve esserci lo studio e il confronto di opere coeve, dello stesso autore o del suo ristretto ambito, e una rigorosa ricerca filologica. L’autore avanza però alcune perplessità sulle scelte operate in questo restauro per la ricostruzione della tomba.

    Francesco Negri Arnoldi provides a brief historical résumé of the major restorations of surviving funerary monuments in Italy and in Europe. He emphasises that each attempt of restoration/reconstruction is rendered problematic by the extreme variety of cases encountered and the different conditions that the monuments severally present; he illustrates the point with many examples. He insists, however, that the essential basis for any restoration must be formed by the study of and comparison between works of the same date, by the same artist or by his immediate circle, and exhaustive research on the available sources. He also expresses some doubts about the choices made in the reconstruction of the De Bray tomb in the present restoration.
