  Las banderas, los símbolos visibles más modernos de la soberanía nacional, hunden sus raíces en el ámbito militar, en cuyo ceremonial tienen actualmente un papel relevante papel. Desde sus orígenes y hasta hace menos de dos siglos, las enseñas ocuparon un lugar preferente en los campos de batalla como símbolos de los ejércitos y con una importante función táctica.

  Actualmente, las banderas y estandartes reglamentarios en las unidades del Ejército de Tierra, la Armada y el Ejército del Aire, se describen en el Reglamento de Banderas y Estandartes, Guiones, Insignias y Distintivos, aprobado por Real Decreto 1511/1977, de 21 de enero, que establece además los guiones y estandartes de S.M. el Rey y S.A.R. el Príncipe de Asturias, así como los diversos distintivos e insignias que corresponden a las autoridades civiles y militares.

  No son solamente éstas las utilizadas en el contexto castrense. Las Reales Órdenes Militares y más altas condecoraciones disponen de guiones-enseña propios, a los que deben añadirse los diversos guiones y banderines de las unidades, y las banderas coronelas históricas que están presentes en actos militares relevantes.

  Flags, the most modern visible symbols of national sovereignty, are rooted in the military field, in whose ceremonies they currently place an important role. Since their origins and until less than two centuries ago, ensigns occupied a preferential place on the battle fields as army symbols and with an important tactical function.

  Currently, regulation flags and banners in the Army, Navy and Air Force units are described in the Regulation on Flags and Banners, Standards, Ensigns and Emblems, approved by Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, which also establishes the standards and banners of H.M. the King and H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias, as well as the different emblems and ensigns that correspond to civilian and military authorities.

  These are not the only ones used in the military context. The Royal Military Orders and highest decorations have their own ensign-standards, and there are also different standards and pennants of the units, as well as the historical main flags that are present at important military events.
