Light steel framing is becoming increasingly popular in a wide range of applications, used not only as secondary steelwork, but also as primary load-bearing elements. The thin gauge of cold-formed steel used in construction means that it is lightweight, but also especially prone to local buckling. As a consequence of this behaviour the design is based on eff ective section properties, which is uncommon for hot-rolled members. The industry embraces certifi cation schemes ensuring cold-formed steel products comply with the latest standards.
