Resumen de ¿Los periféricos?: Latin American Philosophers on the Margions of the Existentialism Canon

Edwin Murillo

  • The article at hand is a historical formulation of Latin American Existentialism, tracing its earliest concrete appearances in the late nineteenth century through to the first three decades of the twentieth. For this purpose, I focus on José Martí, Raimundo de Farias Brito, and Samuel Ramos all of whom dealt explicitly with humanity in the throes of Being. I begin by summarizing the limited critical presence of Hispanic Existentialism via the Spanish contingency, and subsequently I tease out the Existentialness of the Latin Americans while counter-positioning canonical European thinkers throughout for comparative purposes.
