  • Toxoplasmosis is a widespread human infection worldwide and its prevalence depends on the location and age of the population. Usually takes asymptomatic when present, the signs depend on the organ or system of organs involved.

Cat and other felines are the scavengers of the infective forms for other species of animals, humans and even for the same cat . An infected cat eliminates oocysts for one to two weeks and one deyección may contain millions of them. Infection with tachyzoites or free forms are accidental and infrequent, when transplacental parasite infection from infected mother to child during the first trimester of pregnancy occurs, usually the most severe can lead to death or cause irreversible sequelae fetus infection may also occur through blood transfusions repeated .

This paper explored the prevalence Toxoplasma gondii in a representative sample of pregnant women attending the Municipal hospital in consultation "Ruben Zelaya " city Yacuiba 2008.

It Involved 245 pregnant women, aged 14 and 49. The influence of age and reactivity on the prevalence rate was assessed.

The Toxoplasma gondii antibody determination was performed using the technique of indirect hemagglutination (Hai Toxo Polychaco). The prevalence of toxoplasmosis in the study population was 71.84 %, the value was very high, even more so considering that the infection of this parasite depends on education, and basic hygiene.
