    • This paper shows an analysis of the municipal solid waste system in Mexico City. The analysis aims to identify the current status of the system highlighting the main aspects involved in waste management activities. Aspects related to demographics, economy and waste generation in Mexico City are presented. With an estimated average generation of 13,000 tonnes of waste everyday, the legal frameworks, technical capabilities, infrastructure, technology, public policies and environmental initiatives must be measured to determinate effectiveness. In order to generate a comparison scheme of waste management activities, selected waste management systems were analysed, the summary of the main findings of the analysis is presented to point our key factor in proper performance and effectiveness of such system. The participation of the private sector in waste management activities is also analysed in order to diversify the treatment methods and to improve not only the facilities and the technology used but also the whole aspects of the waste management system of Mexico City.
