Resumen de Bulimia nerviosa, depresión, auto-estima, actitudes disfuncionales y perfeccionismo en adolescentes puertorriqueños
As it has been documented in the literature, Bulimia Nervosa (BN) has serious physical and psychological consequences. In Puerto Rico, very few studies have focused on this disorder. The present study was designed with the objective of learning more about BN and associated psychological characteristics. The study aimed to evidence the presence of bulimic behavior and its relationship to depression, self-esteem, perfectionism and cognitive distortions. One hundred and forty two adolescents from the San Juan metropolitan area particpated in this study. They completed the following instruments: Bulit-R, Children´s Depression Inventory, Piers-Harris Children´s Self-Concept Scale, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale. The presence of bulimic behavior was evidence at 22% when the 85 cut-off point was used and at 7% when the stricter cut-off point of 104 was used. A positive and significant relationship was found between BN and the following variables: depression, perfectionism and dysfunctional attitudes. A negative significant relationship was revealed betwwn BN and self-esteem. The implications of these findings are discussed.
