    • The historian, the architect and the politician: respecting the correct distance.

Empering from his realm of predilection of basic research, the architectural historian is increasingly invited to engage in the field of applied research. He is called upon by politicians, and even architects, to give his opinion on the preservation of national heritage buildings or their archival traces, on the nature of projects of tranformation of existing sites, or on the conception of projects for cultural or touristic development of his own objets of study. In this way, from observer and analyst, he becomes an actor in national heritage, with the risk of being instrumentalized and becoming responsible for the transformation, or very existence of his body of work. The loss of distance from the object studied engages his deontology. "History can only be constituted if one looks at it and in order to look; you must be on the outside". Based on this position of Roland Barthes, this article aims at redesigning the limits of action of the historian of centemporary architecture, based particularly on experience acquired during contracts for studies commissioned by te Ministère de Culture (Cultural Ministry), local communities and independent architectural agencies.
