El paso de la escritura ideográfica o vocabular a la alfabética o fonémica constituyó en la Antigüedad un hito del pensamiento sobre el lenguaje y su representación (y del pensamiento en general), hito en modo alguno singular, sino renovado y siempre abierto a nuevos hallazgos y contextos.
Se presenta aquí un esquema que trata de dar cuenta de los diferentes modos en que cabe que se dé tal desarrollo, prestando especial atención, en cada caso, a la relación de la escritura con el tipo de lengua. Se incluyen algunas breves reflexiones adicionales sobre el principio del rebus y el denominado Schlagwortprinzip

The shift from an ideographic writing to an alphabetic or phonemic one constituted a milestone in Antiquity regarding thought about language and its representation (and thought in general). By no means was it a singular milestone, but rather one which is ever renewing and always open to new findings and contexts.
A scheme is sketched here that attempts to account for the different ways in which such development can take place.
Particular attention is paid to the relationship of writing to the specific linguistic type. Some brief additional remarks on the principle of rebus and on the so-called Schlagwortprinzip are included.
