  La periodización de la arquitectura del siglo XIX plantea numerosos problemas al investigador que quiere organizar su producción muy diversa y heterogénea.

  La dificultad viene en parte de la herencia historiográfica del siglo XX que, al buscar los orígenes del movimiento moderno, se concentró sobre sus primicias en detrimento de una percepción más objetiva y más exhaustiva. El posmodernismo permitió revisar esta concepción. Pero otra dificultad, primordial por ontológica, radica en la misma cultura historicista. Después de ceder el paso la nostalgia de lo antiguo a un clasicismo muy diversificado, todo el pasado se volvió el territorio del arquitecto.

  Este planteamiento tenía por objetivo crear el « estilo del siglo XIX ». El pasado era así el presente, a veces hasta el futuro, y el historiador del arte actual, en el momento de una crisis de la historia, cae a la trampa de este juego de espejos.

  The periodization of 19th-century architecture presents an array of problems to any researcher seeking to organize its very heterogeneous production. This difficulty is partially due to the historiographic heritage of the 20th-century that, in searching for the origins of modern architecture, focused on its beginnings to the detriment of a more objective and inclusive vision. Postmodernism revised this conception. But another difficulty, ontological and therefore fundamental, arises from the historicist culture itself. Once the nostalgia for Antiquity had made way for a much more diversified form of classicism, all of history became faire game for the architect. The goal of this approach was to create the “style of the 19th-century.” The past became the present and sometimes even the future, leaving the art historian of today, in a moment of historical crisis, caught in an endless series of reflected images.

  La périodisation de l’architecture du XIXe siècle pose de nombreux problèmes au chercheur qui veut organiser sa production, très diverse et hétérogène. La difficulté vient en partie de l’héritage historiographique du XXe siècle qui, en cherchant les origines du mouvement moderne, s’est focalisé sur ses prémices au détriment d’une perception plus objective et exhaustive. Le postmodernisme a permis de réviser cette conception. Mais une autre difficulté, primordiale car ontologique, tient à la culture historiciste elle-même. Après que la nostalgie de l’antique eut laissé la place à un classicisme très diversifié, le passé tout entier devint le territoire de l’architecte. Cette démarche avait pour objectif de créer le « style du XIXe siècle ». Le passé était ainsi le présent, parfois même le futur, et l’historien de l’art actuel, au moment d’une crise de l’histoire, est pris au piège de ce jeu de miroirs.
