Resumen de Prayer and penance in the South Bay of the Chora Esonarthex

Rossitza B. Schroeder

  • This article offers a new interpretation of the fourteenth-century mosaics in the south bay of the esonarthex of the Chora church in Constantinople. The study shows how architecture and iconography articulated a space intended not only for commemorations, as has been previously argued, but also for confessions and penance. It focuses on the monumental icon of Christ Chalkites, the donor portraits, and the images from the healing ministry of Christ and the ways in which their complex interactions reveal how the space of the south bay was used.
