Resumen de L'autoportrait de Dürer au Louvre en 1922

Mathilde Arnoux

  • The acquisition of Dürer's Self-Portrait with a Thistle by the Louvre, Paris, in 1922 is discussed in relation to the post–World War I context. The acquisition might seem to indicate that aesthetic judgments had not been involved in postwar rancor when it was a question of one of the most highly esteemed German artists. However, this is not the case as, in fact, the purchase resulted from the cooperation of the Ministère de la Justice and the Musées Nationaux for the liquidation of German property in receivership. Above all, acquisitions such as the Dürer confirm the ambiguities of the museum world with regard to German painting, the instrumentation of Germanophobia, and the opportunism that arises from war.
