The antiques cabinet bearing the coat of arms of a Farnese cardinal (Musée de la Renaissance, Ecouen) is indeed the studiolo of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. The provenance is proven by a private inventory, apparently written in 1644. The studiolo was commissioned in 1578 from the carpenter Flaminio Boulanger. Originally a simpler project, it was considerably complicated and embellished during its execution. It stands out from contemporary studioli because of its sober, purely architectural style.
