    Mexican poet Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza (1839-1918) translated the works of Virgil, both paraphrastically and literally. Finally, he convinced himself that it was better to do it literally. His literal translations of Eclogues, Georgics, and the first three books of the Aeneid, published in the early 20th Century, are very valuable indeed. Inspired by the poet from Mantua, Joaquín Arcadio Pegaza wrote poetry himself, referring to the Mexican nature. As Geraldo Holanda Cavalcanti points out with respect to the translator’s work, it went far beyond achieving linguistic correspondence, it constituted an identification process with the source author, whose texts were reconstructed and interpreted by the translator.

    El poeta mexicano Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza (1839-1918) tradujo la obra de Virgilio tanto en forma amplificada (parafrástica) como de manera literal. Se convenció finalmente de que era mejor seguir el segundo camino. Es muy apreciable, en efecto, su traducción literal de las Églogas, las Geórgicas y los tres primeros libros de la Eneida, publicada a principios del siglo XX. Bajo la inspiración del poeta de Mantua, escribió poesía propia, referida a la naturaleza mexicana. Como señala Geraldo Holanda Cavalcanti respecto del trabajo del traductor, su tarea fue mucho más allá de la búsqueda de correspondencias lingüísticas; constituyó un proceso de identificación con el autor fuente, cuyos textos fueron reconstruidos y a la vez interpretados por él.
