  • Around 1400, the major church constructions in Strasbourg, Ulm, Vienna, and Frankfurt revealed municipal intervention. This intervention came about because of an intense climate of emulation between municipalities possessing the perfect mastery of stonework, urban elites anxious to demonstrate their faith and prosperity, and political and recently acquired or augmented legal freedoms.
