• In France, it now appears that the hopes raised by President Sarkozy that art history would become an obligatory high-school subject are going to be dashed. Currently, art history as a subject in itself is only taught after baccalauréat level. Following his declarations while a candidate, Sarkozy then charged the Minister of Culture with introducing art history into school as a subject distinct from art. However, it now appears, firstly, that art historians will not be involved in training teachers and, secondly, that the “history of the arts” will only be taught as one element of other subjects already on the curriculum.
