Archival documents recently uncovered in Venice and in Paris shed new light on the Parisian sojourn of the Venetian scholar and art merchant Antonio Maria Zanetti the elder. Zanetti was in Paris between 1720 and 1721. Actively supported by the banker Pierre Crozat, Zanetti made friends with the bookseller Pierre-Jean Mariette. He returned to engraving, but rapidly abandoned it in favor of commerce. He developed an especially rich and fruitful relation with Parisian collectors, dedicating several of his post-1722 creations to them. Alternately artist and dealer in works of art for Philippe d'Orléans and his court, Zanetti played a particularly sensitive role in the European “Republic of Arts” revitalized in France by the opulence of the Regency. The archival documents are reproduced in an annex.
