  • Resumen
    • Jusepe de Ribera's 1637 painting The flaying of Marsyas (Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy) represents the painter's taking on of a “new identity.” In this depiction of Apollo flaying the Phrygian satyr Marsyas, Ribera reflected upon his own creative action, which underwent a dramatic change at a time dominated by competition between Spanish and Neapolitan cultures. He used the tradition of artistic competition as an opportunity to acknowledge the superiority of a particular artistic direction in the most elaborate manner possible while legitimizing his own stylistic change. He relied on the very superior powers that could inspire the ability not only to depict the world but also to change it. He made sure of a concurrence of a humble awareness of his own limits and the idea of limitless creativity, thereby demonstrating his newly gained mastery and confidence.
