  • Resumen
    • A discussion of the extent to which Claude Joseph Vernet's Ports de France series of paintings can be considered vedute or not. On his return to France from Italy in 1753, Vernet was given the unprecedented task of painting views of the different French ports. This huge task ran over ten years and had an obvious documentary element. The writer goes on to discuss misleading similarities between the Ports de France and vedute, the major differences in both's depiction of place, their similarities in depicting historical events, and the fact that there are the greatest number of similarities between the Ports de France and Van Wittel's take on the veduta.
