A study of El Greco's c. 1607–14 painting View and Plan of Toledo (Museo del Greco, Toledo, Spain). This stormy landscape has been regarded as the “most artistic” cityscape. In it, El Greco has self-confidently made rearrangements in the topography of the city, and the image consequently testifies to independent artistic interventions. Very recent research recognizes that he dealt with an artificial construct. This work is an artistic self-declaration—a painting on the art of painting.
