A study of a group of portals in French churches. These portals are simplistically called “follow-up works” of the royal portal of Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France. Certain connections exist between the west portal of the latter cathedral and the south portal of the cathedral in Le Mans, the former west portal of Saint- Bénigne in Dijon, and the west portal of Saint-Loup-de-Naud. However, these examples also display a differentiated arrangement of the newly developed portal type as well as innovations that show ideas from previous design models. The royal portal of Chartres can be considered neither the first early Gothic portal nor a direct model for this group of portals. However, it remains an outstanding and extremely innovative masterpiece of European sculpture of the 12th century, whose importance in its time should not be underestimated by virtue of its present-day state of preservation.
