  • The writer points out a previously overlooked representation of a camera obscura in Jan Vermeer's painting The Art of Painting, a work dating from around 1665/66, now in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum. The camera obscura can be seen behind the carpetlike curtain in the left third of the painting. The writer goes on to consider how the presence of the camera obscura may affect the interpretation of the painting.
