  • The writer discusses the image and aesthetics of the body in the context of female nude portraits, in particular the portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and one of her sisters produced by the School of Fountainebleau in around 1599 (Louvre, Paris). The writer considers how the painting's approach to the body sheds light on ideas about beauty and elegance in the late Mannerist period, but also reflects a particular conception of the woman and the feminine.
