  • The writer discusses mirrors as metaphors for painting in northern European paintings of the 15th and early 16th century. Six paintings by Netherlandish artists or artists reflecting strong Netherlandish influences, dating from between 1470 and 1520, show the Madonna being painted by St Luke. In each work, a mirror reflecting St Luke at work, serves as an example of the mirror-like power of painting to represent reality.
