  • The writer discusses Leon Battista Alberti's De Statua on the occasion of the publication of Oskar Bätschmann and Christoph Schäublin's new German translation Alberti's shorter art-historical writings (Das Standbild. Die Malkunst. Grundlagen der Malerei, 2000). He discusses the dating of De Statua and concludes that it was probably written in around 1445; examines the historical, intellectual context in which it was written; and sketches the themes addressed in the work.
