  • An article based on a preliminary paper presented at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, Germany, on February 14, 2001. The writer discusses historiated initials on Carolingian illuminated manuscripts. He suggests that the historiated initial is an initial whose decorative imagery embodies a narrative or symbolic meaning that refers to the text that follows. He argues that the term text in this case refers not simply to the textual content, but also to the text as vox—as the sound of the speaking or singing voice. Similarly, he contends, the initial's reference to the text goes beyond mere illustration.
