format painting by the Russian Jugendstil Romantic Michail Nesteroff. The ambitious work expresses a search for metaphysical contents against a background of the manifold spiritual and esoteric movements in Russia on the eve of the First World War. It shows a religious procession along the banks of the Volga, with believers from the past and the present, representatives of power and the spirit, and ordinary people. The procession of symbolic figures is lead by a peasant boy, an ideal innocent figure, a spiritual antithesis to guilt-laden secular power. The writer focuses on the Nesteroff's construction of a national-religious Russian identity in his work.
