The inscriptions in Martin Schongauer's mural Das Jüngste Gericht at the St.-Stephans-Münster in Breisach, Germany, are discussed. In around 1490, Schongauer painted a mural depicting the Last Judgement across three walls of a hall. He included seven Latin inscriptions, five of which have survived complete. Thus far, three of the inscriptions have been identified as Biblical quotations. The writer examines the origin and function of the inscriptions, focusing in particular on the two longer, fragmentary texts.
