  • Resumen
    • The writer considers the extent to which Dürer's choice and presentation of themes within his cycles of the passion of Christ reflect his own convictions beyond current trends in popular piety. Focusing on two small devotional manuals, the Small Passion and the Engraved Passion, she examines Dürer's iconography, treatment of sources, the context in which he worked, and his attitude to art and spirituality. She concludes that Dürer was an engaged humanitarian sage who believed his responsibility was to make his personal insights known to his audience and to communicate convincingly that any path chosen by a seeker of God's grace is valid and validated, so long as it is pursued with utter faith.
