A slightly revised version of a paper presented at the Neuzeiten art-historical conference held in Jena-Weimar, Germany, in March 1999. The writer discusses theoretical debates about ornament around the end of the 18th century. Referring to the work of writers such as a Schiller and Karl Philipp Moritz, she addresses Neoclassical conceptions of the ornament and the modern notion of ornament as an autonomous form.
