Resumen de Drunkenness, War and Sovereignty: Three Stucco Panels from the Palazzo Scala in Florence
The article examines three stucco sculptural relief panels, created by Italian sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni, located in the Palazzo Scala in Florence, Italy which visually represent drunkenness, war, and sovereignty. The first panel, drunkenness, depicts centaurs boiling a live pig in a cauldron. The war panel shows nude men in a violent battle. "Sovereignty" depicts men attacking a horse and bull. The author is largely concerned with the strange iconography of these panels, noting it has no art-historical precedent. To explain the iconography, the author analyzes possible textual sources for the panels within fables dealing with the interaction between humans and animals.
