  • The essay analyzes depictions of peasants in the artwork of Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder, with focus given to the ways in which Brueghel relates contemporary peasants to ancient pagans. More specifically, the author examines the presence of a shrine and broken pagan idol in Bruegel's painting "The Flight into Egypt."
