Resumen de Reconstructing Veronese's Petrobelli Altarpiece

Xavier F. Salomon

  • The writer discusses the reconstruction of the Petrobelli altarpiece, one of Paolo Veronese's grandest altarpieces. Painted around 1563 for Antonio and Girolamo Petrobelli's family chapel in the now destroyed church of S. Francesco in Lendinara, Italy, the altarpiece suffered the fate of so many other similar paintings; between 1788 and 1789, it was cut into pieces, which were sold separately. Immediately following the altarpiece's breakup, any knowledge of its original location and appearance was lost. However, it has now been possible to devise a new reconstruction of the altarpiece and to identify a fourth, long-lost fragment. The writer goes on to trace the story of the painting's reconstruction in detail, starting with the arrival of three fragments in London in the late 18th century.
