Resumen de George Cottington and the Dering family portraits of 1626

Robert Tittler

  • An article on a series of portraits painted by George Cottington in 1625 and 1626 for Sir Edward Dering of Kent, England. Dering's records of his payments to Cottington add to the relatively small pool of knowledge about the cost of portraits at this time, as well as revealing something of the working practices of portrait painters. Though Dering's records cite the name of the artist as “Mr. Cuddington,” it is likely that he was one George Cottington, a relative of the man who would later become the First Baron Cottington. Whatever his origins, the four Cottington portraits of which at least photographic records remain show him to be a portraitist who, while slightly awkward, exhibited the mastery of ornamental display and genealogical detail that the rising courtier of 1626 required.
