An overview of recent exhibitions and publications on the artist Wassily Kandinsky. “Kandinsky—Absolut. Abstrakt,” originally shown at the Lenbachhaus in Munich, Germany, and on display at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, until August 10, 2009, presented over 90 paintings by the artist. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition neither constituted a summary nor drew “definitive conclusions” from existing scholarship. “Kandinsky—Das druckgrafische Werk”—which ran concurrently in Munich, and is on show at the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Germany, until July 12—centered on an almost complete set of the artist's prints. When set alongside the larger show, it provided an unprecedented opportunity to compare Kandinsky's prints with key paintings from throughout his career. The catalogs for both these shows—along with the new book Kandinsky, by Helmut Friedel and Annegret Hoberg—provide new material and fresh interpretations of the artist's life and work.
