Resumen de Reflections on the Mantegna exhibition in Paris

Luke Syson

  • A consideration of “Mantegna 1431–1506,” an exhibition of work by the Italian painter Andrea Mantegna, on display at the Musée du Louvre, Paris, in winter 2008. As well as displaying the work of Mantegna himself, the exhibition investigated the complex network of teachers, imitators, rivals, and collaborators that surrounded him. It demonstrated that an astute choice of collaborators was just one of the things that made Mantegna remarkable. A resounding success on its own terms, this utterly absorbing show featured a number of fascinating groupings. Its supreme feat was the reunion of three predella panels from the Santo Zeno altarpiece of 1456–59 that had not been seen together since 1956.
