Resumen de Art History Reviewed III: Roger Fry's 'Cézanne, a study of his development', 1927

Richard Verdi

  • An analysis of Roger Fry's book Cézanne, a study of his development, first published in 1927. The book explores Cézanne's seemingly contradictory position as an artist caught between the study of nature and the act of contemplation. Fry offers a masterly exploration of the works in which Cézanne presents nature and structure in equal measure, and also acknowledges the artist's powers as a colorist as among the supreme aspects of his genius—a judgment with which few would disagree. Throughout, Fry deals fairly and astutely with the contending currents of Cézanne's creative aims, and he is also ahead of his time in concluding the book with a consideration of Cézanne's attitude toward women.
