The writer examines newly discovered documents relating to Mattia Preti's altarpiece St. Ignatius in glory in the church of S. Vigilio in Siena, Italy. The documents add further information about the circumstances of the work's commission and that of the altar itself, even if they also raise other questions that cannot yet be answered. They allow the painting to take its place among the documented works of Preti's later years and permit it to be securely dated to 1681–83.
