An analysis of Aeneas and his family fleeing from Troy (circa 1585–86), a rediscovered fresco by Ludovico Carracci in the Palazzo Ratta in Bologna, Italy. Today the condition of the fresco is fairly poor, yet its original high quality and exceptionally inventive composition are still evident. Despite its decrepitude, the newly attributed fresco enhances current understanding of the chronological and biographical circumstances that determined the critical future developments of both Ludovico Carracci and his artist cousin Annibale Carracci, shedding light on a crucial moment for the success of both painters' output, when their work rapidly went off in different directions.
