Resumen de Juan Muñoz's 'Five seated figures' (1996) at the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid

Lynne Cooke

  • The writer discusses Five Seated Figures, arguably the most memorable of the sculptural groupings created by Juan Muñoz and now in the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Within this self-contained group, each seated figure responds differently to the shock experienced by one of their members when he spies a reflection in the mirror behind him. As in other works he created, Muñoz eloquently probes the limits and boundaries of the self. In this case, the figural group is an autonomous sculpture rather than part of an installation with a scenographic dimension, but, like many of his key works, it is filled with dramatic overtones.
