The article discusses the early exhibition history of American artist Robert Rauschenberg's Combines, works of art that combined painting, sculpture, collage and photography. Particular focus is paid to a 1956 statement by the artist in which he acknowledged that the use of unconventional materials made the Combines inherently fragile and in need of repair. Rauschenberg's tendency to work spontaneously, without preconceptions, is also discussed.
