  • Resumen
    • The writer discusses a newly discovered Portrait of Étienne Dumonstier II. The collection of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg includes three drawings by Pierre Dumonstier I, both related to a presumed project for a double oil portrait of himself and his brother Étienne. To these drawings can now be added a previously unrecognized drawing in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, formerly assigned to the North Italian or Flemish schools of the late 16th century. It can be identified as another portrait of Étienne, possibly also related to Pierre's double portrait project. While there can be little doubt that the sitter in the Dublin drawing is Étienne, many questions remain unanswered; among other things, the existence of yet another portrait of the same sitter and attributed to Étienne himself means that the authorship of the work must remain open until more work is done to distinguish the individual hands of the Dumonstier family.
