The writer proposes a new identification for a family portrait painted by Batholemeus van der Helst, now in the Wallace Collection in London. This painting was acquired at an auction in 1862 as a portrait of Gerrit Schouten and his wife Geertruij Gael, but recent research on the couple has made it apparent that this cannot be the case. The writer proposes that the painting depicts Schouten's second wife, Elizabeth Claes Loenen, and her first husband, Jochem van Aras, along with their daughter Maria; an inventory of Van Aras's possessions, made after his death, lists a large family portrait y Van der Helst.
